KwaZulu-Natal Education Department has demanded that police be deployed in schools, following the murder of a teacher at Masuku Primary School in southern Durban last week.
This is coming amidst other calls for teachers to arm themselves. South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) last week labelled these calls as reckless and dangerous.
The Educators’ Union of South Africa had made the calls, claiming that government was forcing them to take matters into their own hands, due to insecurity in schools.
Sadtu’s Mugwena Maluleke shot down those demands.
“Then tomorrow someone is going to be saying the learners must be armed or the communities must be armed. So, we’ll be arming ourselves against each other. The only solution we need to do is to use the power of education to make sure that our learners have and our communities to respect education and life.”
