Mihlali Ndamase on Taking Care of Cousin, Sister… “I Didn’t Expect These Resposibilities So Soon”
There is an unwritten rule among South Africans and Africans in general; the more successful siblings should take care of their younger or not so successful family members.
It’s called the ‘black tax’, perhaps because white people do not feel as compelled to take over such responsibilities.
Social media influencer Mihlali Ndamase finds herself in such a position; blessed financially than many of her family members.
She recently revealed that she is taking care of her baby cousin who has just joined university, as her sister prepares to join soon. All this despite her being only 24.
“I’m 24, looking after my baby cousin, who is in her first year of university, while preparing to put my baby sister through school very soon.”

She added that the fact that she did not expect to have such heavy responsibilities this early pushes her to work even harder.
“I no longer just work for myself, which motivates me to push harder.”
Those commenting commended her, some also giving their own examples of how they support family members.
