South Africa, like the rest of the world, saw a trend where the rich got even richer with the inequality gap widening further.
South Africa’s wealthiest individuals saw their wealth grow for yet another year, but this time around it was relatively slower compared to their global counterparts.
The country has 5 billionaires as per Forbe’s records, and that remained the same in 2019. The magazine’s realtime billionaire tracker lists Nicky Oppenheimer as the richest man in South Africa by a healthy margin.
His net worth at the begining of 2020 was $7.7 billion, having grown from $7.3 billion the previous year. His ranking on the global Forbes list of billionaires however went down to 238.
Johann Rupert is second on the list with a networth of $6.5 billion. His was a significant increase from the previous year’s $5.5 billion. His ranking on the global list also went up to 311 from 317 the previous year.
Patrice Motsepe, Koos Bekker and Michiel le Roux complete South Africa’s billionaires’ list, with their wealth increasing moderately.
