Popular South African Gin Bought by Owners of Absolut, Jameson and Chivas
Pernod Ricard, the giant French liquor company has acquired a majority stake in South African distillery Inverroche.
The South African brand, founded in 2011, will join the Pernod Ricard famous family of liquor. Among their most renown brands include: Jameson, Absolut Vodka, Glenlivet, Chivas Regal, Ballantines, Malibu, Beefeater, Martell among others.
Speaking of the acquisition, Inverroche fonder Lorna Scott said, “Pernod Ricard’s vast distribution network will enable Inverroche Gins to reach new consumers.”
“We will be taking a luxury African brand to a large audience and sharing the story of our common heritage.
She will continue serving as CEO, as well as maintain shareholding.
Inverroche is based in the rural community of Still Bay in the Western Cape. They pioneered the use of indigenous fynbos in gin production.
According to Scott, this was meant to protect the fynbos, which are under threat of agricultural development and invasive species.
Inverroche produces 3 gins; Gin Classic, Gin Verdant and Gin Amber; as well as 2 rums and 3 liqueurs. Their products are sold in 18 countries.
The business is also keen on affirmative action, with women employees making up 70% of the workforce.
Pernod Ricard is meanwhile not a stranger in the South African market as they already distribute 12 brands in the country.
