SABC Financial Troubles Deepen.. Can’t Pay Employees
National broadcaster South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), has seen its financial woes deepen, with reports that it is now struggling to pay its employees.
Board charman Bongumusa Makhathini has revealed that it is now extremely difficult to continue being on air.
Last month, the public broadcaster only managed to pay its employees by defaulting on other bills, and this cannot be sustainable move going forward.
SABC has a debt of R1.9 billion, and government assistant has been slow and not enough.

“We owe SanTech about R337 million; we owe Supersport, which talks to us being able to cover sports, we them about R223 million. We owe the City of Joburg over R10 million.” Makhathini said.
”Can you imagine if the City of Joburg was to say they want their money all of it tomorrow, or if SanTech says ‘guys pay us something, otherwise we’re going under.”
The government announced in March that it would be giving SABC some interim relief. The broadcaster had requested for a R6.8 billion guarantee, but treasury declined to meet this figure in full.
Right now, it remains unclear when the government injection will arrive.
