New Number Plates for Cape Town Motorists Coming This Week

By the end of this week, vehicle owners in Cape Town will start receiving new format number plates. A statement released on Monday by the Western Cape Town Department of Transport stated that from the time of transition to the new CAA licence number, there will be no more issue of a CA licence.

The department has also said that those who have a CA licence number will be able to transfer it to another vehicle that is transferred into their name or another vehicle they own.

At the moment that available CA combinations run out, the system will not permit new licence numbers to be issued for the rest of that day,” it said.

“Anyone waiting for a new licence mark will have to wait until the next business day for a CAA number to be issued. This disruption is unavoidable for technical reasons, and members of the public are requested to be patient with registering authorities on the day of the changeover.”

As has been the case before, the first 9999 CAA number will be reserved as a special licence numbers according to the department.

Using the normal process of licence number application, one will receive a number starting from CAA10000 at no extra cost. Application for unique number plates will be processed at the applicable rate for specific combinations of numbers and letters.

More details about the fee and process can be found on the Department of Transport and Public Works website.
