The Eastern Cape Department of Health is dealing with a wave of robberies at clinics, prompting a reevaluation of their security strategies.

For instance, at Booysens Park Clinic, patients now face strict access controls, resulting in longer wait times and reduced access to care.

Last year, the provincial health department invested over R700 million into security contracts aiming to protect staff and patients. However, it’s not just about financial investment.

The Department of Health emphasizes the need for community cooperation with law enforcement to combat these crimes.

Examples of facilities facing challenges include:

• KwaZakhele Clinic, temporarily closed due to security fears.
• Despatch Clinic and Motherwell NU8 Clinic, victims of multiple robberies.

Clinics such as Motherwell Community Health Centre are under pressure due to increased non-emergency cases after nearby clinic closures, straining their resources.

Healthcare workers are understandably worried, as evidenced by a robbery at Joe Slovo Clinic that caused an early labor incident in a pregnant woman, underscoring the urgent need for stronger security measures.

Measures Implemented

The Eastern Cape Department of Health has implemented several measures, including installing CCTV cameras, panic buttons linked to armed response units, and improving perimeter controls.

Despite these efforts, the high crime rate remains a significant societal problem that requires a concerted effort from community members, police, and local authorities.

This year, 119 incidents of break-ins and robberies have resulted in approximately R1.5 million in damages. Despite the substantial investment in security, there is ongoing debate about the transparency concerning security service providers, impacted by privacy laws.
