Minister Zulu: Pay Up if You Want World-class Highways
JOHANNESBURG – Pay up if you want world-class roads. That was the message from Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu.
Speaking to Eye Witness News, the minister said that she understands the impact e-tolls have on small businesses, but insisted that some payments must be made.
“Obviously, they (small and medium enterprises) need the money in their pockets but they also need to appreciate and understand some payment needs to be done.”
“We need to pay in order for us to make sure that our infrastructure is in good condition, otherwise you’ll have potholes,” Zulu said.
She added that South Africa has some of the best roads on the continent, and they need to be maintained.
She however questioned the current payment method used to collect money. The e-toll system has been back on the spotlight after Sanral decided to suspend pursuit of collection of outstanding fees.
The news of the suspension has been met well, especially by transport companies.
