SASSA is a government body established by the South African Social Security Agency Act, 2004.
It is a schedule 3A public entity established for the provision of an effective management, administration and payment of social assistance and service to South Africans. The Act was signed into law by the president on 28th May 2004.
Over the years, SASSA has offered many types of grants to vulnerable South Africans. Among them are: oldder person grant, child support grant, care dependency grant, war veteran’s grant, disability grant etc.
Its most recent addition is the R350 SASSA Social Relief of Distress grant to cushion vulnerable South Africans from the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this grant, unemployed South Africans who do not receive any other form of grant or aid, will receive R350 per month for 6 months.
