Pretoria Taxi Driver Jailed for Bribing Traffic Cops
The regional court at Atteridgeville has jailed a driver for attempting to bribe traffic cops.
Thabani Nqakula, a taxi driver in Pretoria was reportedly stopped in January for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, where he is said to have offered R200 to the cops.
“He was arrested immediately and charged with bribery,” Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane said.
Sowetanlive reports that on Monday, “the court found him guilty of the charge and sentenced him to six months imprisonment or a R3,000 fine. He was further given a three-year sentence suspended for five years.”
It was further revealed that the national traffic police had arrested about 50 motorist since the start of the year, for bribery.
According to RTMC CEO Makhosini, this latest conviction will send a clear message to motorists that ”they can no longer break traffic laws with impunity.”
“Our traffic officers are no longer prepared to have their good name tarnished by motorists who are not prepared to obey the rules of the road.” he said.
