Gaming Meets Learning: E-sports Take Center Stage at Curro Schools
Curro Schools are shaking things up in education by weaving e-sports into their curriculum.
This exciting shift took center stage during the Curro Clash National LAN competition in 2024. The event, a vibrant part of their move toward digital learning, took place over four action-packed days at Curro Durbanville in Cape Town and Curro Krugersdorp in Gauteng, with folks also joining in online.
This year’s competition buzzed with energy as 470 enthusiastic participants dove into games like Minecraft Education, Rocket League, and Overwatch 2. They weren’t just playing for glory—prizes powered by Acer for Education sweetened the deal. The African Cyber Gaming League handled the logistics like pros.
Curro’s LAN competition isn’t just about fun and games, though. It’s a key player in Curro Schools’ mission to mesh traditional learning with the digital world. By tapping into e-sports, they’re nurturing talents in teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity—similar skills you’d usually see honed in physical sports. And you didn’t have to be there to catch the action; the event was broadcast live on Curro Esport’s Twitch and YouTube channels.
The results were in, and several schools shone brightly in games like Valorant and Overwatch. Notably, Curro Brackenfell’s under-14 Rocket League team snagged first place, while Curro Durbanville celebrated victories in several categories, solidifying their prowess in e-sports.
As we sprint into a future where digital skills are vital, initiatives like this put South African schools ahead of the curve. They show just how e-sports can complement educational goals by sharpening strategic thinking, teamwork, and communication chops.
Curro isn’t stopping here—they’re already gearing up for the 2025 competition. They aim to keep highlighting the educational perks and social fun that e-sports bring to the table.
