Brenda Fassie’s Statue in Newton Removed

There was confusion and outrage after a statue of music icon Brenda Fassie was brought down in Newton, Johannesburg.

The life-size statue of Brenda sitting on a stool in front of a microphone, has stood outside Newtown Music Factory since 2006. It was commissioned by the Sunday Times as one of the 40 memorial art works, during the paper’s 100th anniversary.

The statue was taken down on Saturday without warning, leaving many people disappointed.

The city of Johannesburg has however come forward and explained that the statue was only taken down for repairs.

“The city can confirm that Brenda Fassie statue has been removed for repairs.

“A public participation process will be undertaken where members of the public’s views will be sought on the appropriate location for the statue once repaired,” City spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane said.

The statue might find a new location after the repairs, with passers-by outside Newton Music Factory being asked for their views.

However, it appears that most people are of the view that it should remain where it was.
